Week 1: A Conversation with Guest Speaker Laura Knapp by Gabriella Elizarraras
By UCLA X469.21 Student Gabriella Elizarraras
On April 2nd, Laura Knapp spoke to our “Best Practices in Social Media for the Communications Professional” class, and it really set the tone and standard for the rest of the quarter. The class is relaxed and intimate, and we were lucky to have an opportunity to ask her anything and everything we could possibly want to ask a social media professional.
Laura started her professional journey in New York City working at a large PR firm. She enjoyed that life for three years but was then ready for something new. That’s when Laura made the leap to the west coast. Better weather. More networking. BETTER WEATHER. Once she moved across the country again by herself, she was ready to put her skills and talents to use. She launched her own business that she soon sold to a huge corporation. But Laura wasn’t satisfied, so she jumped back in and out of corporate life, eventually starting a whole new business again. This self-starter and driven woman has always owned who she is and what she wants. It’s 2019, and she is that woman.
To have a woman like Laura come to our class really made it feel like there are people just like me in this industry. Not bitter or “typical LA” people, but happy, healthy, and thriving. Laura, if you have the chance to read this, I just want to say thank you for being THAT person in the industry. I hope to meet more just like you.
