Week 1: A Conversation with Clint Schaff by Lindsay Hope
By UCLA X469.21 Student Lindsay Hope
Do you ever wish you could just yell “NEXT” when the person you’re listening to is talking? We had that opportunity during our week one discussion with Clint Schaff as he gave his introduction. While this approach to conversation was new to me, I found it refreshing.
Clint started off with a bang when he explained to the class that if something he said did not resonate with us, we could simply say “next”, and he would move on to the next topic. Not only was Clint a great speaker, but by giving us this option, it really sped up the smaller points he was making which led to more time for the important stuff.
Clint — a.k.a “Big Cleez” — is a North Dakota born, hip-hop loving farm kid who wears many hats and slays the strategy and development game. Not only is he a great storyteller, but he has also mastered the art of social media with his playbook.
We learned that when we post on social media, we cannot predict what the outcome will be. He taught us not to fixate on one outcome, but to just roll with the punches and begin without knowing the end.
Clint showed us how to use the “P.O.S.T” (People, Objectives, Strategies, and
Technologies/Tactics) approach. He also broke down key content themes and allocations such as:
- Inform 15%
- Empower 35%
- Motivate 25%
- Fellowship 25%
- Support (as needed)
My biggest takeaways from our conversation involved: 1) finding a fictional persona to provide focus for a campaign and using that persona as a target audience, 2) mapping out your content hooks one month ahead of time, and 3) measuring performance and adjusting content based on the data.
Now, every time I turn to the “POST” approach, I will think of what the Big Cleez taught me and remember that social media is about listening – not just talking.
